Last Monday, Madison Square Park Conservancy celebrated Rachel Feinstein’s current art installation in the park, Folly, with ArtTable, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting and advancing women in the visual arts. The artist herself was in attendance and explained the inspiration and process behind her three-work installation. It centers on the theme of fairytales and 18th and 19th century architectural follies. Her largest sculptures to date and her first public art project in the U.S., Feinstein recounted the challenges she faced in transforming her small paper models into larger-than-life aluminum sculptures. She ultimately employed methods borrowed from artist and engineer Alexander Calder. Feinstein expressed her own initial surprise and great satisfaction with how flawlessly the structures mimic her paper models.

Folly will be on display until September 7. To learn more about the installation, join us every Wednesday at 12:30 pm for a free 15-minute tour in front of Feinstein’s Cliff House on the east side of the park.
